HAIGHT ASHBURY SHINGLE

Situated on a narrow storybook street in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury, this unique property sits astride the dramatic and historic Victorian known as the Jefferson Airplane Fan Club House. The existing structure sat vacant for decades—a nondescript 1,030 square foot cottage originally meant for staff serving that Victorian.

In proposing its replacement, Armour Architecture did a thorough study of the character of the neighboring homes, with the goal of creating a new design that would blend into the period context of the block while bridging the past and future - appropriate alongside its glamorous vintage neighbor, yet unique and special on its own. The new design is a contemporary expression of Shingle style, locally exemplified by architects Bernard Maybeck and Ernest Coxhead - a unique, historical regional style that’s still interpreted today.
